Recognizing a faulty depth sensor
The depth sensor rarely wears out, but a few signs can indicate a malfunction. The background blur effect no longer triggers in portrait mode, even after restarting the phone. Images appear flat, with no depth between the subject and the background. If the Camera app reports an error in portrait mode, it is often this sensor that no longer communicates with the processor. A restart is not enough to resolve the issue.
How depth detection works
The depth sensor works in tandem with the main camera. It measures the distance between your phone and the objects being photographed by sending infrared patterns invisible to the naked eye. These patterns bounce off surfaces and return to the sensor, which calculates the depth in microseconds. The processor uses this data to create a depth mask that determines what should remain sharp and what should fade away.
